Taunton Public Space Improvements
Taunton Deane Borough Council is looking at ways of making Taunton town centre more user friendly, creating attractive public space and making the area better for pedestrians and cyclists. We want to create new and improved public areas that are attractive, where people can walk, shop or simply sit and rest awhile, areas with fewer vehicles, less pollution and reduced noise.
WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff was appointed by the Council to develop trial changes in the arrangement of public space in the town centre. This goes hand-in-hand with Taunton’s New Year designation as one of a new wave of Garden Towns and is a key part of the Council’s growth programme.
We are proposing changes to East Street, Hammet Street and St James Street to improve public space and redirect traffic to more appropriate routes. This would enhance the look and feel of our town and could attract more visitors, establishing Taunton as a key destination for shopping, culture, recreation and eating out. This will further help attract investment and enable businesses to thrive.
A public consultation presenting our ideas can be seen at Taunton Library, Paul Street, Taunton TA1 3XZ, during usual opening hours, from Tuesday 21 February until Saturday 18 March 2017.

Consultation materials can be found at the bottom of this page.

What happens next?
The Council will use your comments and the views of other key stakeholders to refine our suggestions. We will publish a report to show the consultation feedback in summer 2017.
If the proposals gain support, the refined schemes will be considered by the Council’s Executive in the late summer and we would introduce the changes on a trial basis in autumn 2017.
The trial would run for 18 months, with a review every six months to monitor and assess the changes before any permanent public space changes come into effect in 2019.
This is a real opportunity for us to review our town centre and look at how we can create a better environment for residents, shoppers and visitors.
Thank you for your contribution.
