Castle Green

Castle Green is at the historic farm of Taunton.  Eleven hundred years ago an Anglo-Saxon minster church evidently stood on the site. In the 1100s the Bishops of Winchester created Taunton Castle as the administrative centre of their great estates in Somerset.  The green became the Castle’s outer ward and soon the whole site was defended by moats.  Access was controlled by an east gate, still known as Castle Bow, and a west gate, which stood near the present Winchester Arms.

Castle Green has had many uses over the last few centuries, most recently having long served as a car park; Castle Green was re-landscaped in 2012 as part of a major regeneration of the town. The impressive plans to reinstate Taunton’s historic Castle Green as a civic space for markets, events and relaxation were completed in September 2012. The most spectacular feature is a glass-sided bridge that floats across the Castle's grass moat. In-built lighting, coupled with floodlights at the museum, make it a magical sight at night.

Meanwhile the Museum of Somerset (sited on the north side of Castle Green) reopened its doors in 2012 following a superb £6million refit. On Monday 15 October His Royal Highness the Earl of Wessex visited Taunton to open the new Museum of Somerset and Castle Green. After officially opening the Museum of Somerset HRH The Earl of Wessex cut a ribbon on The Glass Bridge linking Goodland Gardens to the newly constructed Castle Green public space, and pupils from Taunton Preparatory School were the first to cross.

In 2013 the Castle Green Bridge won a prestigious engineering award from the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE), winning the Centenary Engineering Excellence Award for small companies in the infrastructure category. More recently the bridge was commended by judges in the Rural Town Planning Institute’s (RTPI) South West Awards.
